If you have visited the beaches of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort on Hilton Head Island, you might have had the pleasure of meeting him. If you have ever taken a surf lesson or surfed the Hilton Head Island swells, you have definitely met him. Legendary surfer, Byron Sewell is a former professional surfer, surf camp instructor, surfing enthusiast and Hilton Head Island native. Nick named “Surf Dog”, Byron was born and raised on Hilton Head Island with his professional surfing Dad teaching him everything he knows about the sport.
Sewell has traveled the world in search of perfect swells and new experiences, but Hilton Head Island has always been home. Hilton Head Outfitters was lucky enough to work with Sewell in recent years where he runs the Hilton Head Outfitters Surf Camp. Watching him share his passion with the next generation of surfers is incredible. Parents and kids rave about how much fun they have with Sewell and giggle over their best and worst attempts over ice cold watermelon after every session.
This year, Sewell brought his girlfriend, former professional surfer Carole Berthiaume to help with the Surf Camp. “It’s easy to see why when you speak with them. Both of them have the same love for surfing and a desire to spread that love to others. This is an impulse that only gets stronger when they’re together, and it’s one of the reasons their camp is so successful,” says Zach Bjur.
